Oral Platform Presentation Slides (FINAL)

OPP Slides are due: March 14, 2025 (No Exceptions)

Training purpose of the oral platform presentation:  to mimic a real-life experience in the career of an academic psychiatry researcher: a brief research presentation.  You will have 10 MINUTES to succinctly and confidently describe a research finding. You will be communicating to an audience of scientists who are mental health researchers but are not necessarily expert in your particular subfield.

What is the goal?

  1. To tell a brief story about a specific research finding or proposed project in 10 MINUTES OR LESS
  2. To receive constructive critical feedback by CDI faculty
  3. To communicate effectively and to convey enthusiasm for the impact of your research

Given only 10 minutes, what should I spend time on?

  1. Tell a story about 1 research finding or 1 potential project
  2. Remember: less is more when it comes to number of slides, amount of text per slide, and range of findings or studies presented
  3. Keep it simple and clear
  4. Keep the story moving: make sure each point leads to the next, and don’t get bogged down by things like methodological details

Keep it clear and comprehensible

  1. Be parsimonious with your use of text. Focus on figures and images to support your points.
  2. Ideally, use ≤ 10 slides
  3. Keep slide design effective
  • Choose a color scheme and use a design template to enhance visual coherence
  • Avoid busy backgrounds
  • Use a font color that contrasts with the background color
  • Keep formatting uniform across slides
  1. Make it pleasant
  • Use professional-looking font styles
  • Keep title fonts the same style and format throughout
  • Use consistent and sufficiently large font sizes for text
  • Avoid overly wordy slides and distill ideas down to a few important points
  • Keep graphics simple and effective
  • Proofread everything

We recommend that you practice aloud to improve the flow of your presentation and to ensure that you’re within the 10-minute limit. If you have any questions as you prepare your presentation, please contact us.
